How DEIF SCM-1 Communicates with Third-Party PLC and DCS Systems
The DEIF SCM-1 implements data interchange with external third-party PLC and DCS platforms primarily based on open-standard Modbus protocols. Standard basic data communication does not depend on vendor-specific proprietary hardware adapters; proper cable wiring and communication parameter configuration are sufficient to establish valid data links.
Two physical media are available for external third-party integration: RS-485 serial port and Ethernet RJ45 network port.
For RS-485 serial-bus connection, Modbus RTU serves as the communication protocol. In this architecture, the third-party PLC or DCS functions as the Modbus master device, whereas the SCM-1 operates as a Modbus slave node on the multi-drop bus. The master station initiates cyclic read requests targeting SCM-1 holding registers to retrieve a full range of process data, including electrical measured parameters, unit operating states, binary status flags and alarm diagnostic information. Furthermore, the master can transmit operational instructions by writing values into assigned register addresses, enabling remote functions such as synchronisation activation, load-sharing adjustment and related control operations. Appropriate RS-485 bus termination resistors and matching baud-rate, parity-bit and slave-address settings are mandatory to guarantee serial-bus communication stability.
For Ethernet-based networking, Modbus TCP protocol is deployed. Straight-through network cables link the SCM-1 Ethernet interface to the existing control-system local area network. The PLC or DCS sets up an active TCP client connection toward the IP address of SCM-1. Once the network socket is established, the controller directly accesses the complete SCM-1 register mapping table. Bidirectional real-time interaction is achieved: high-frequency acquisition of generator measurements, status feedback and alarm events, as well as transmission of remote control commands from upper-level automation systems.
It should be emphasised that the CAN bus and DEIF exclusive DCS bus are designed exclusively for internal inter-module communication among native DEIF controller products. These interfaces cannot be directly interfaced to generic third-party PLC or DCS hardware.
