ABB S403M-CA Voltage & Current Ratings (Official Specification)

Voltage Ratings

- Rated operational voltage (Ue): 415 V AC, three-phase. This represents the nominal working voltage for normal protection and switching operations within SMISSLINE-TP busbar power distribution systems.

- Maximum permissible operating voltage: 440 V AC. This is the upper voltage limit for continuous device operation; sustained voltage exceeding this value may degrade internal components and compromise protection performance.

- Minimum operating voltage: 12 V AC / 12 V DC. Defines the lowest voltage threshold for reliable contact indication and mechanical switching functionality, not for full-range short-circuit protection.

- Rated insulation voltage (Ui): 440 V AC. Reflects the dielectric withstand capability of internal insulation structures against long-term power-frequency voltage stress.

- Rated impulse withstand voltage (Uimp): 4 kV. Specifies the ability to resist transient over-voltage surges caused by switching events or lightning disturbances.

- Rated frequency: 50 / 60 Hz. The device is certified for standard industrial AC power grids at these two common utility frequencies.

Current Ratings

- Rated current (In): Customer-selectable ranging from 6 A to 63 A with C-curve characteristic. The exact nominal current is encoded in the full part number, e.g. S403M-C32-CA for 32 A rated version. It stands for the continuous current the breaker can carry without unwanted tripping under defined ambient conditions.

- Magnetic instantaneous trip range: 5-10 × In. Under short-circuit conditions, the magnetic element will trigger instantaneous tripping when fault current falls within this interval.

- Rated ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu): 10 kA @ 415 V AC. This is the maximum prospective short-circuit current that the breaker can safely interrupt, after which the device may no longer be serviceable.

- Rated service short-circuit breaking capacity (Ics): 50 % of Icu. Represents the fault-current level the breaker can interrupt while retaining full operational capability for subsequent service.

- Tripping characteristic: C-curve thermal-magnetic. Thermal bimetallic element provides inverse-time overload protection, while the magnetic coil delivers fast short-circuit tripping, suitable for general-purpose resistive and light-inductive load applications.

Operation Guide for ABB S403M-CA (3-Pole Plug-in Miniature Circuit Breaker, SMISSLINE-TP System)

1. General Description

The ABB S403M-CA is a 3-pole current-limiting plug-in miniature circuit breaker designed for the ABB SMISSLINE-TP busbar system. It provides dual protection of thermal overload and magnetic short-circuit for three-phase AC circuits, complying with IEC/EN 60898-1 and IEC/EN 60947-2 international standards. The rated ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity reaches 10 kA at 415 V AC. Adopting C-class tripping characteristics, the magnetic instantaneous trip range is 5–10 In. Equipped with an independent Contact Position Indicator (CPI), it displays red for closed contacts and green for open contacts, which accurately reflects the actual contact status regardless of the handle position. The device features IP20 protection degree to ensure finger-safe operation and prevent accidental contact with live parts.

2. Pre-Operation Inspection

Verify the equipment model, rated current and tripping characteristics are consistent with project design requirements, and check the device appearance for cracks, deformation or mechanical damage.

Ensure the SMISSLINE-TP busbar is completely de-energized before installation. Inspect the busbar contact surface to remove dust, oxidation layers and foreign impurities to guarantee reliable contact.

Fully isolate downstream cables and loads, and confirm no short-circuit, earth fault or abnormal wiring exists in the three-phase circuit.

Check the on-site ambient conditions. The allowable operating temperature ranges from -25 ℃ to +60 ℃. Avoid installation and operation in overheating, corrosive or heavily dusty environments.

3. Installation & Plug-in Procedure

Align the S403M-CA breaker with the 3-phase slot of the SMISSLINE-TP busbar, and push it vertically until a clicking sound is heard to confirm full locking and engagement. Do not apply excessive force to avoid mechanical damage to the device and busbar.

Connect the load-side cables to the lower terminals of the breaker, and fasten the terminal screws with standard torque. The cable conductor cross-section shall comply with the official specifications of the ABB SMISSLINE-TP system.

Confirm the L1/L2/L3 phase sequence is wired in accordance with the project drawing. The SMISSLINE-TP busbar supports flexible phase adjustment without re-wiring the load-side cables.

Complete visual inspection after installation: ensure the breaker is closely attached to the busbar without looseness, deviation or exposed live conductive parts.

4. Normal Operating Manipulation

Closing Operation: Push the operating handle upward to the ON position. Check that the CPI window turns red to confirm contact closure, and measure the downstream terminal voltage to verify normal power supply.

Opening Operation: Pull the operating handle downward to the OFF position. Check that the CPI window turns green to confirm contact disconnection, and ensure the downstream circuit is fully de-energized.

The device allows manual frequent ON/OFF switching for conventional circuit control. However, it is mainly designed for circuit protection rather than frequent motor switching applications.

Monitor the surface temperature of the breaker after power-on. Abnormal overheating indicates loose terminals or circuit overload; power off the device immediately for troubleshooting.

5. Trip Condition Handling

Overload Trip: The breaker will automatically trip with the handle staying at the intermediate position. Disconnect the downstream loads, eliminate the overload cause, reset the handle fully to the OFF position, and then switch it back to ON for normal operation.

Short-circuit Trip: The magnetic instantaneous trip will be triggered once a short-circuit fault occurs. Isolate the power supply, locate and clear the short-circuit fault completely, then perform a standard OFF-ON reset. If the breaker trips immediately after re-closing, do not force closing; thoroughly inspect the circuit wiring and load equipment for hidden faults.

It is strictly prohibited to fasten or tie the handle in the ON position to bypass the protection function. Forced locking will disable safety protection and lead to fire and electrical hazard risks.

6. Hot-swap Maintenance (SMISSLINE-TP Exclusive Feature)

Important Note: The hot-swap function only applies to downstream load circuits; the upstream SMISSLINE-TP busbar remains energized during operation.

Switch the S403M-CA handle to the OFF position before removal.

Release the locking latch, and pull out the entire breaker module vertically from the busbar.

Insert the new replacement breaker into the busbar slot until fully locked, switch the handle to ON, and restore the downstream power supply and load operation.

Verify three-phase continuity and load operating status after replacement. The hot-swap feature effectively reduces system maintenance downtime and improves the reliability of critical power circuits.

7. Post-Operation & Safety Notes

Perform regular inspections, including terminal fastening status, no overheating marks, normal operation of the contact position indicator, and flexible movement of the operating handle without jamming.

This plug-in breaker is only applicable to the original ABB SMISSLINE-TP busbar system. It cannot be installed on standard DIN rails without a dedicated SMISSLINE-TP adapter base.

All installation, testing and maintenance work must be performed by qualified electrical technicians and comply with local electrical safety codes and industry specifications.

In case of frequent unexplained tripping, inspect downstream load equipment, cable insulation and phase-to-phase short-circuit risks. It is forbidden to arbitrarily replace the breaker with a higher rated current without formal design approval.

Store spare breakers in a dry indoor environment, and avoid mechanical collision, extrusion and long-term damp exposure.
