Embedded Fast Recovery Anti-Parallel Freewheeling Diode of GE P112-6052

Structure configuration: Six fast recovery epitaxial diodes (FRED) are embedded within the P112-6052 6-pack IGBT power stack. Each diode is anti-parallel to one IGBT chip to form an integrated single-phase leg. The full stack comprises six IGBTs and six matched anti-parallel diodes, forming a complete 2-level three-phase inverter bridge.

Core function: Deliver a freewheeling path for inductive motor load current. When the IGBT turns off, the diode conducts to dissipate magnetic energy stored in motor inductance, suppress inductive voltage spikes and prevent IGBT damage from overvoltage breakdown. It also carries regenerative feedback current under four-quadrant operation.

Electrical characteristics: Tuned for fast reverse recovery with soft recovery behaviour. It lowers reverse recovery peak current and high-frequency switching oscillation. A low forward voltage drop reduces conduction losses, while reverse leakage current remains minimal at the rated blocking voltage. Its 1700V voltage rating and 600A current rating are fully matched to the paired IGBT chip.

Integration advantage: Diodes and IGBTs are assembled inside a single unified power stack. The internal busbar design shortens current loops and reduces stray inductance, eliminating extra wiring losses found in discrete external diode arrangements. This integrated construction cuts component count, saves cabinet footprint and reduces risks of field wiring defects.

Switching performance: Optimized for the operating switching frequency band of GE P112 medium-voltage drives. It significantly reduces reverse-recovery switching losses, raises overall power conversion efficiency and lowers heat generation within the power stack.

EMI suppression: Soft recovery characteristics mitigate high-frequency noise and voltage oscillation triggered by abrupt current decay during diode turn-off. This suppresses system electromagnetic interference and simplifies EMC engineering for the complete drive cabinet.

Thermal coordination: Diodes share the same cooling substrate and thermal path as the IGBT chips. Built-in NTC temperature sensors monitor overall chip temperature and enable synchronous thermal protection for both IGBTs and anti-parallel diodes. The drive activates overtemperature protection once junction temperature exceeds the preset threshold.

Application adaptability: Well suited for heavy-duty industrial loads such as mining conveyors, marine propulsion systems, oil & gas compressors and boiler feed pumps. It withstands frequent current reversals and recurring surge currents during four-quadrant regenerative operation.

Reliability benefit: Adopts high-power semiconductor chips with strong surge current capability. The matched thermal expansion design between diode chips and the substrate avoids thermal cycle fatigue under prolonged start-stop sequences and variable load fluctuations.

Compatibility: Fully compatible with the gate drive logic and protection system of GE P112 drives. Standard commissioning requires no modification to additional snubber circuits. Diode fault conditions can be transmitted to the main controller through the power stack’s hardware fault feedback signal.
