Kongsberg 304605 (PSU 48V Power Supply Unit, IPL0250-0000) Application Scenarios

The 304605 is a rack-mounted 48 VDC power supply designed for the Kongsberg K-Chief marine automation system. It accepts 100-240 VAC input and delivers a rated output power of 170 W, delivering regulated DC power to remote I/O modules, RBUS bus transceivers and other electronic hardware within local control cabinets.

Scenario 1: Engine Room Alarm & Monitoring Cabinets (AMS)

This power unit is fitted into local engine control cabinets onboard cargo ships and bulk carriers. It feeds power to remote I/O modules including RDIOR420 and RMP420, as well as signal conditioning circuits for temperature, pressure and level alarm transmitters. It sustains continuous alarm signal acquisition and reliable data transmission to bridge operator stations.

Scenario 2: Power Management System (PMS) Cabinets for Offshore Vessels

It is deployed in PMS cabinets on offshore supply vessels and platform support vessels. It energizes I/O modules responsible for capturing generator operating status, circuit breaker auxiliary feedback and protection trip signals. It maintains stable power for load shedding sequences, generator synchronisation interlocks and bus communication under severe electromagnetic interference.

Scenario 3: Ballast and Cargo Control Cabinets for Container Ships and Tankers

Mounted in distributed ballast and cargo control cabinets within pump rooms and cargo holds, it supplies 48 VDC to valve feedback I/O hardware, solenoid valve drive circuits and RBUS communication transceivers. This enables bridge operators to remotely monitor tank levels and actuate ballast valves.

Scenario 4: Auxiliary Machinery Control Skids

It is integrated into control cabinets for seawater cooling pumps, fresh water generators and sewage treatment systems. It powers DI/DO modules used for start-stop status feedback, fault contact sensing and local status lamp control, supporting module self-diagnostics and online channel configuration.

Scenario 5: K-Safe Fire & Gas and Non-Safety Interlock Cabinets

It operates with K-Safe safety systems on offshore drilling rigs and floating units. It supplies discrete I/O modules handling gas detection, fire alarm and utility skid interlock signals. Redundant PSU arrangement eliminates single-point power failure for critical interlock functions.

Scenario 6: Local Dynamic Positioning and Thruster Auxiliary Control Cabinets

It serves DP and thruster auxiliary cabinets of offshore vessels. It provides power for distributed I/O modules and RBUS interfaces that process thruster status feedback, valve control commands and position reference signals.

Scenario 7: Vessel Retrofit and System Expansion at Shipyards

It is applied in K-Chief upgrade and cabinet expansion projects. It can replace obsolete power supplies or support newly added remote I/O racks when expanding measurement and control points, complying with marine class requirements for vibration, humidity and operating temperature.

Compatible I/O Modules for Kongsberg 304605 Power Supply

The Kongsberg 304605 (IPL0250-0000) is a 48VDC, 170W rack-type power supply dedicated to the K-Chief marine automation system. It provides stable, regulated 48V DC power for all RBUS-bus-based remote I/O modules installed in the same control cabinet. All below compatible modules share the unified rack power supply architecture and redundant RBUS communication protocol, fully matching the power output and bus specification of 304605:

1. RDIOR420

A mainstream remote digital I/O and relay integrated module for K-Chief systems. It is equipped with 16 configurable solid-state channels (freely switched between DI/DO) and 16 independent relay output channels. It adopts redundant RBUS bus communication to exchange real-time data with the system RCU controller. Widely used for marine alarm monitoring, equipment status collection and on-site actuator control, it perfectly adapts to the power supply output of the 304605 module.

2. RMP420 (Part No. 306712)

A high-performance remote multi-purpose universal I/O module. It features 32 multifunctional configurable channels, which support flexible configuration of analog input (AI), analog output (AO), digital input (DI) and digital output (DO). In addition, it is compatible with RTD temperature signal acquisition and pulse/frequency signal input functions. Covering most marine process signal collection and control scenarios, it is the core analog & digital hybrid I/O module matched with 304605 power supply units.

3. RDIO401S / RDIO420S

Specialized high-stability remote digital I/O modules tailored for the K-Chief 700 system. Optimized for RBUS bus transmission, these modules focus on discrete signal acquisition and switching output control. They feature strong anti-interference performance, adapting to harsh marine cabin electromagnetic environments, and can operate stably with power supplied by the 304605 PSU.

4. K-Safe Series Distributed Safety I/O Modules

Safety-grade discrete I/O modules supporting Kongsberg K-Safe safety system architecture. Mainly applied in offshore platforms and marine fire & gas detection systems, ESD emergency shutdown systems and utility skid interlock control cabinets. These modules share the same cabinet rack and RBUS bus infrastructure, and rely on 304605 for stable 48VDC power supply to ensure the reliable operation of ship safety interlock functions.
