Pilz 301120 Hardware Construction
Overall mechanical structure: It is a standard Eurocard plug-in module, intended for installation in the PSS1 BMPS rack, with IP20 protection rating inside control cabinets. The front panel accommodates operating elements and status indicators, while the rear edge connector interfaces with the rack backplane bus.
Core dual-section processing hardware: It contains two independent processing domains, namely the failsafe (FS) safety section and the standard (ST) automation section, each equipped with its own processor chip. The FS safety section uses a dual-redundant processing architecture to execute safety logic and cross-check calculation results. The ST standard processor manages non-safety automation tasks, data communication and HMI interaction.
Memory components: Separate non-volatile flash memory stores user safety programs and standard applications. SRAM holds runtime variables. A memory cartridge slot supports program backup and fast module replacement. An onboard backup battery preserves data during power loss, paired with circuitry that monitors battery condition.
Front-panel man-machine hardware: A four-digit LED shows diagnostic codes. Multiple status LEDs indicate power status, FS/ST operating modes and fault alarms. Two selector switches set operating modes for the FS safety section and ST standard section, and a dedicated button accesses the fault history stack.
Bus and communication interfaces: The rear backplane connector links the isolated FS safety bus and ST standard bus to exchange data with I/O modules. A galvanically isolated RS232 port is used for programming and commissioning. A galvanically isolated RS485 interface connects to the SafetyBUS p safety fieldbus for remote safety nodes.
Power and monitoring circuit: The module receives 24 VDC power from the rack backplane. Onboard power regulation circuits produce stable supply voltages for processors and peripheral chips. A hardware watchdog serves the FS safety section, and the system continuously monitors input voltage, chip temperature and internal circuit integrity.
Diagnostic and isolation hardware: Multi-layer self-test circuitry checks processors, memory and communication links. Optocouplers provide isolation between the internal core and field bus interfaces. A fail-safe hardware circuit forces safety outputs to the predefined safe state if critical faults occur within the FS section.

Pilz 301120 (PSS1 SB CPU) Application Fields
Automotive Manufacturing
Widely deployed in automotive welding robots, assembly stations, stamping production lines and body-in-white manufacturing processes. The module realizes emergency stop response, safety door interlock, light curtain zone protection and safe speed supervision. It supports SafetyBUS p distributed safety I/O networking to ensure coordinated and reliable safety control for automated production lines.
Packaging & Printing Machinery
Applicable to carton packaging equipment, filling machines and industrial printing presses. It integrates safety protection and standard automation control on a single CPU, covering safety guard locking, two-hand operation verification and safe standstill detection, effectively preventing mechanical injury during equipment operation and manual intervention.
Metalworking & Machine Tool Industry
Applied to CNC machining centers, lathes, milling machines and hydraulic press equipment. It monitors safety protective enclosures, spindle safe speed and mechanical stroke interlocks, reliably prohibiting dangerous mechanical movement during manual operation, maintenance and tool replacement.
Material Handling & Logistics
Suitable for automated warehouses, palletizing robots, conveyor systems and intelligent sorting equipment. The module implements emergency stop chain linkage, safety zone monitoring and overload protection for lifting and stacking machinery, ensuring safe and stable operation of automated logistics lines.

Woodworking & Stone Processing
Used for various sawing, planing and cutting machinery. It precisely monitors safety guards and protective isolation devices, fulfilling strict safety protection standards for high-risk cutting equipment and reducing mechanical injury risks during production.
