Working Principle of ProSoft AN-X4-AB-DHRIO
This high-performance industrial communication gateway enables bidirectional data protocol conversion between EtherNet/IP and Allen-Bradley DH+ or Remote I/O fieldbus.
Equipped with an embedded processor, dual independent protocol stacks and galvanic-isolated interface circuits, the gateway runs as an EtherNet/IP adapter on the Ethernet side. On the field-bus side, it can be configured as DH+ master/slave or Remote I/O scanner according to practical application requirements.
Remote I/O Operation Mode
Under Remote I/O mode, the gateway serves as a Remote I/O scanner. It cyclically transmits output data issued by the upper-level EtherNet/IP PLC down to field remote I/O modules through the Remote I/O bus, and collects input status signals from on-site I/O hardware. All collected I/O data is mapped to EtherNet/IP assembly tags, which modern Logix-series controllers can directly read and write over the EtherNet/IP network.
DH+ Operation Mode
Under DH+ mode, the gateway behaves as an independent DH+ network node. It exchanges PCCC protocol messages with legacy DH-plus devices including PLC-5 and SLC-500. It converts DH+ PCCC read-write instructions into standard EtherNet/IP CIP messages, and transforms feedback data from legacy DH+ equipment into EtherNet/IP-compatible data for upper-level controllers.
Users set data mapping rules either through the embedded web server or the ProSoft AN-X configuration tool. Configurable items contain data length, address offset and data transmission direction for bidirectional interaction across two protocol domains. After configuration download, the mapping table is saved inside non-volatile memory of the gateway.
Galvanic isolation is applied between the EtherNet/IP Ethernet port and DH+/Remote I/O terminal port. This design restrains ground-loop interference and shields modern Ethernet control systems from electrical noise generated by old-generation field-bus cables.
Built-in diagnostic functions continuously monitor link health status on both network sides. It identifies communication timeout events, field-bus abnormalities and internal module failures. Diagnostic statistics can be retrieved via web interface or EtherNet/IP object attributes.
The gateway cannot run PLC user logic by itself. Its core function is protocol conversion and transparent data forwarding between heterogeneous bus systems. It keeps data synchronized and completes signal handshaking, guaranteeing data consistency between EtherNet/IP-based controllers and legacy DH+ / Remote I/O field devices.
